The ancient archeological site of Caral is located in the Supe Valley of Peru, 23 km from the coast. It is believed that the pyramids were built at about the same time of the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt. This was a time before ceramics and maize were introduced to the region. The ancient inhabitants of the Supe Valley expanded upriver from the coast, developed agriculture ( squash, beans, guava, and cotton) to support a growing population. In the process they created the complex sociopolitical organization required to build an irrigation system, the grand city of Caral, and smaller urban centers in the region. Fish bones and mollusk shells at Caral show an active trade in foods between coastal and interior inhabitants and suggest that the civilization depended on both agriculture and fishing.

The Pachacamac Temple is an archeological site located 40km southeast of Lima, Peru in the valley of the Lurin River. It is one of the largest religious centers of the Peruvian Coast. The site is believed to have been built around 200-600 AD .Then around 600-800 AD the Huari Empire developed the site further. Around 800-1450 AD the Huari Empire collapsed and the site grew in size. During this period many pyramids and structures were built. The Incan Empire again expanded the site and it became the Incan administrative center and a religious shrine. During this time the Mamacuna and the Pyramid of the Sun were built.
